Having a garburator is great! It’s a super convenient appliance that gets used very regularly. However, it is important to know that there are several disadvantages to owning a garburator. Here we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of owning a garburator to help you decide if a garburator is right for you.

What Are Some Of The Advantages Of Owning A Garburator?

The biggest advantage of having a garburator is the convenience factor. You may find that being able to get rid of things very quickly is a huge plus, especially right after dinner! You simply shovel all the waste down your kitchen sink and you’re done. This may also take the strain off of your dishwasher too by reducing any waste that gets put in there along with your dishes.

What Are Some Of The Disadvantages Of Owning A Garburator?

One of the things that needs to be done when using a garburator is using a lot of water with it. We recommend that you use cold water when using your garburator. Because most people who have garburators have two sinks (one with the garburator and one without) we advise that you fill up the side without the garburator with cold water, and unplug the sink to drain the water while using the garburator. When in use, you should also to run the faucet at full blast over the garburator and let the cold water in the other sink flush down the waste. If you don’t run enough water when using your garburator it creates this thick sludge that has the potential to clog up your drain line.

Another thing that people don’t realize when owning a garburator is that just because the waste is out of sight and out of mind doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Just like a septic tank, there is a lot of organic matter that gets flushed down the drain when using a garburator. This requires more oxygen to break down at your municipal waste treatment plant, and takes a lot longer to break down. In other words, garburators are not exactly environmentally friendly.

Conclusion – Should I Get A Garburator?

When looking back at the advantages and disadvantages of owning a garburator, the main thing to take away is that the choice of owning a garburator comes down to convenience. Do the conveniences of owning a garburator outweigh the disadvantages? This all comes down to personal preference. The only thing we can say is that the people who do own garburators like them and use them a lot.
